I must let you know of the interesting design proccess that Almog Weiss and Mira gafni have when they design their collections, at Una-Una fashion shoe shop.
Here is how the process is described:
At the Una-Una studio, designing a new model is always an exiting and stimulating event. The 2 designers work together on their models in a unique fashion:
Work begins when one of the designers stretches a piece of leather onto a last. It is then sculptured into shape to form a very crude 3D model. This model is then edited by the other designer, who might add or alter features.
The developing model goes back and forth between the 2 designers, until they’re both happy with the result. The dynamic process might lead to an end result that is very different from the starting point.
Inspiration comes from working with the materials, from the shape they take when twisted or stretched or heated.
When a few models are in progress, the designers then start to look for features that are shared by the models, as a guideline to the entire collection and new models can be now designed accordingly. For instance, the fall-winter collection for 2009/2010 is all about animals: the stork, the rhino, the dolphin, the seal and the swan.
When a model is finished, the leather 3D model is removed from the last and drawn onto cardboard to create a pattern for the upper and the lining. All the stitches are marked, and the pattern is then cut from leather and sewn to form an upper. The upper is then stretched onto a last and is fitted with a sole.
The first test shoe is tried on, and changes maybe done to it. A new test shoe is now crafted until the final prototype meets all the requirements (i.e. looks, comfort, foot-grip, etc.). This process may take days or weeks, depending on the model. The more complex models may take up to ten tests before completion!
When the testing process is finished the pattern is graded into measures and production begins. As all shoes are handmade, this is also a lengthy and complex procedure. The leather is manually cut, the pieces of leather are sewn together and the uppers are manually stretched onto the lasts. The uppers are left on the lasts for 24 hours, then the soles and heels are manually glued onto the uppers, pressed and left to dry for another 24 hours, then the shoes are taken off the lasts.
All new shoes are carefully examined for possible defects. The now perfect shoes are then cleaned, waxed and shined, as part of a finishing process

Women who have to wear larger than the “normal” size shoes, are really not being helped properly by the world of fleshy shoe designers. This is especially true when they go out for a dress-up evening event. It seems that most designers concentrate on making trendy shoes for the masses, and leave the large sized women without a real solution.
Well, maybe large size feet are not a large problem anymore, so claims Una-Una shoe designer, Mira Gafni. The two designers owning this firm have developed a unique design technique that enable them to manufacture really fleshy shoes, that look great on any foot, regardless of size.
They have examined the way women with larger feet are looking for large size elegant and trendy designer shoes. They have heard how these women are tired of buying men’s shoes or sneakers. And the have decided to develop the techniques that will enable the design and manufacture of quality handmade leather shoes for women, with shoe size of up to 11, 12 and even 12.5.
Well, a few weeks ago, when I had to choose between a few alternatives of manufacturers, who will be the one I promote their products’ sales on the internet, I decided that Una-Una is the right one to assist.
For one, I believe that the fact that they give larger size women the ability to wear great looking shoes, without the frustration of trying to find feminine, elegant and even sexy shoes.
Well, the two designers really impressed me with their passion design and manufacture shoes that will fit to any leg.
Moreover, they also took care of the requirement to have casual but funky sandals, that will complement the feet rather than mistreat them and squeeze them into undersized footwear.
